Cross Writing

Many letters in the 1800s were written both horizontally and vertically. Cross writing, conserved paper and also reduced postage since postage was paid by the page.  This letter was sent in 1838 to ‘Mr. Marshall Crane, Dalton Mass.’ Letters were folded and sealed, and the address was written on the back of the letter.
