Company founder Zenas Crane used this mold and deckle from 1801-1830.
The mould is a frame covered with a metal screen, and the deckle is the frame that fits on top of the mould creating an edge for the sheet of handmade paper.
The lines from the metal screen can be seen in the paper when light is shown through the paper. This is the envelope backlit.
